Cocoon | To metamorphose or decompose.

Project type

Speculative Architecture | Concept | 3d-printed Clay | Small Homes

Type

a biophilic summer holiday home for nature-loving creatives to live in Australian middle open forest, inspired by the shape of a butterfly's cocoon.

The concept of this project is centered around the shape of a cocoon, with the main body representing the metamorphosis of a chrysalis and platforms shaped like butterfly wings. Different life stages of a butterfly showcase different states of being inside and outside: During the chrysalis stage of a butterfly’s life, the pupae stays inside the cocoon. Consequently, the butterfly takes flight outside of the cocoon.

The structure of this project is influenced by Mario Cucinella Architects’ 3D printed clay house using TECLA technology which uses two mechanic arms to print the building simultaneously, thus producing a zero waste, biophillic building quickly. The atypical shape used adds to structural
balance, giving life to an organic and visually coherent design.

In accordance with values associated with biophilic design, this low-carbon housing features minimal furniture. The open-top bathroom encourages confidence, signifying the embracing of physical flaws, with the metaphysical self coming to terms with physical flaws.

As the interior spaces share a common skylight that conveys the ‘zenith light’, this project blurs the lines between the traditional ‘inside’ bedroom and the ‘outside’ communal area, using varying levels of accessibility to segregate spaces
through height.

With multiple pockets of restive spaces for one to ponder alone, this project aims to encourage occupants to lose themselves in introspection and extrospection.
